Process technologies
Italy-USA interchange for food process technologies results in exports only to the USA. In fact there are no significant import values from the USA. According to Anima studies office processing, the field of professional espresso coffee machines represents the greatest export growth to the USA (31 million € in 2012 against 18 million € in 2011). In 2012, the United States are the main destination country, ahead of Germany (who was so in 2010 and 2011) and the United Kingdom. In other words, exports to the United States represent 10% total export of professional espresso coffee machines. The industry of machines and ovens for baking bread, biscuits, pastry and pizza confirms its good presence on the US market. Nearly 28 million € in 2011 also confirmed in 2012, of which 18.5 million € resulting in particular from the sale of “machinery and equipment for bakery, confectionery and industrial bakery (excluding ovens, dryers for pasta and mixers)”. The United States are also among the first countries concerning exports of “machinery and equipment for industrial manufacture of pasta”, 15.5 million € in 2012, 22.5 million € in 2011 and 10.8 million € in 2010. The same applies to “machinery for industrial processing of meat (excluding cooking and heating equipment, freezing and refrigeration equipment)”: 14 million € in 2012 (equal to 11.5% total exports), 10.7 million € in 2011 and 9.5 million € in 2010. In the last year there has been a significant growth of exports of “machines, equipment and tools for mills or for the processing of cereals or dried leguminous vegetables” to the USA: 11 million € in 2012, while in 2011 they were only 3 million € and 3.8 million € in 2010. Even the “machinery for the industrial preparation of fruit and vegetables” marks a clear upward trend. The export of these machines was about 3 million € in 2010, then became 7.4 million € in 2011 and 9.6 million € in 2012.

The US market of automatic packaging machines
Also concerning automatic packing and packaging machines, Italy-USA interchange is all in favor of “Made in Italy” technologies. Analyzing data, in 2011 home sales were 5943.6 million € (+19.3%, source: Centro Studi Ucima Processing on PMMI and ITC data), while import was worth 1829.0 million € (+ 17.5%) and export 792.5 million € (+6.2%). Home sales by customer industry -2012 data – have registered food with a share of 36% and beverage with 24%, followed at long distance by biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors (8%), cosmetics and healthcare (7%) and chemicals (4%). US producers mainly export to Canada (26.1% in 2012), Mexico (15.3%) and China 5.2%. Imports of USA packaging machines to Italy are practically absent. Concerning the import of automatic machines, in 2012 the value was 1,956 million € (source: Centro Studi UCIMA Processing on ITC data). The main exporting countries are Germany (24%), Italy (19.9%) and Canada (14%). In recent years, Italy has been gaining ground against Germany. In 2012, in fact, exports of Italy and Germany were respectively 388.6 million € and 468.8 million €. Made in Italy technologies are increasing by 7.8% while the German ones are lowering by 2.6% compared to 2011. US companies recognize that Italian machines are reliable for their high volume production at a competitive price.
