2025 marks a milestone for European legislation on food contact materials. Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR) has finally been published, set to radically transform the entire packaging system by imposing new requirements in terms of recyclability, recycled content, and extended producer responsibility.
At the same time, Regulation (EU) 2025/351 has significantly updated the safety requirements for plastic materials intended to come into contact with food, introducing new restrictions and specific requirements for substances of priority concern. Also of great importance is the ban on bisphenol A (BPA) in contact materials and the scientific re-evaluation of the entire class of bisphenols, which is already steering the industry towards alternative materials and formulations.
In this constantly evolving scenario, characterized by increasing attention to sustainability and chemical safety, companies are facing new regulatory and technical challenges. The interconnection between legislations, the pressure for greater transparency in the supply chain, and the adoption of digital tools for the traceability of compliance information make constant and qualified updating indispensable.
Now in its 12th edition, the International Conference on Food Contact Compliance in Baveno—to be held at the Grand Hotel Dino from September 30 to October 2—will, as always, offer a unique opportunity to discuss these issues with industry experts, institutional representatives, and professionals from across the supply chain. The high technical level, opportunities for direct discussion, and the picturesque setting of Lake Maggiore continue to make this event an essential reference point for the sector.
